My Experience
Atomic Purple will be a colour that any 90’s kid will hold fond in their heart forever and especially me! As my first handheld console, a gameboy color was an amazing introduction to handheld gaming it opened up a library of those original game boy games and the new experience of game boy color titles.
With a pack of duracell AA batteries, all the Mad Catz attachments possible from a magnifer, clip on controller grip and more the world was your oyster from home, plane, train, car or beyond. With a Pokémon game or two, Disney’s Tarzan and a Harry Potter amoungst others would be played time after time.
About
The Game Boy Color was released in October 1998 in Japan and wider to the rest of the world in November that year. It followed the Game Boy and was the second in the series of the Game Boy handhelds.
Upgrades from the Game Boy and Pocket models saw the introduction of a color screen however it did not contain a backlit screen (something that was included in the Japanese exclusive Game Boy revision the Game Boy Light). As with the original Game Boy it ran on a Sharp 8-bit processor.
In March 2003, the Game Boy Color was discontinued, shortly after the release of the Game Boy Advance SP with its best-selling game Pokémon Gold and Silver, which shipped 23 million units worldwide.
Games
Due to the Game Boy Color console’s backwards compatability with original Game Boy games, along with Game Boy Color exlcusive games ensured a large library of playable games. Some games advertised as Color games were not specifically Game Boy Color exlusives such as Pokémon Gold and Silver which were backward compatable with Game Boy models, however the 3rd game in Generation Two Pokémon Crystal was a Game Boy Color exclusive and not backwards compatable with earlier models.
The last Game Boy Color game ever released is the Japanese exclusive Doraemon no Study Boy: Kanji Yomikaki Master, on July 18, 2003. The last game released in North America is Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, released on November 15, 2002. In Europe the last game released for the system is Hamtaro: Ham-Hams Unite!, on January 10, 2003.
